Type of Position Regular: A staff member is appointed to a position that is essential for the effective long-term operation of the university. Staff members are entitled to the privileges and benefits associated with regular status employment.
Duties: The University of Iowa is seeking an experienced Design Project Manager to manage and supervise the design process for new building construction, building renovation and capital renewal projects of multiple varieties utilizing outside architects and/or engineers. Duties include: Facilitate the selection of architectural and/or engineering consultants, prepare service agreements and negotiate professional fees; Assure compliance with industry standards, building codes, University design standards and procedures, and program objectives of the specific project request; Review progress submittals and facilitate milestone review meetings that include input from campus stakeholders; Develop and effectively manage project budgets and schedules while keeping administration regularly informed of the status of all assigned projects; Manage the project decision making process to ensure accountability in the expending of financial resources and facilitate effective long-term stewardship of University financial and physical assets; Provide technical and administrative support and guidance to other design project managers; Work with the associate director of PM in developing strategies and methods to streamline the project delivery process and play a key role in their implementation. Develop and nurture effective working relationships with University customers; Plan and organize objectives and long-range programs to ensure customer needs are being consistently met; Periodically meet with customers to assess needs, establish definable expectations, monitor performance and resulting levels of satisfaction; Recommend strategies to the associate director of PM for implementation.
Education Required: A Master’s degree in architecture, engineering, or a related field or an equivalent combination of related education and experience is required.
Experience Required: Extensive (5-7 years) experience in the design and construction industry;
Extensive exposure to the design and construction industry in a role as project manager, particularly in leading the design phase;
Experience with accountability for establishing and managing project scopes, budgets and schedules;
Experience in an institutional or other complex customer environment;
Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the principles of an integrated facilities management approach to project management;
Understanding of the total-cost-of-ownership approach to project decision making and other effective practices supporting facilities stewardship;
Proficient in computer software applications;
Demonstrated experience working effectively in a diverse environment;
Excellent oral and written communication skills;
A strong customer service orientation.
Certifications: Licensed architect or engineer in Iowa is required, or ability to obtain Iowa registration within six months.
Desirable Qualifications: Previous roles as a facilities manager or owner’s representative;
More than 7 years experience in the design and construction industry.
