Job Description:
The Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADFG), Sport Fish Division is recruiting for a permanent fulltime Fishery Biologist IV position in Anchorage. This position will serve as the Statewide Hydropower Coordinator to plan, supervise and coordinate fish and wildlife reviews on existing and proposed hydroelectric projects. This position will monitor and coordinate responses to Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) hydropower and hydrokinetic projects statewide and ensure compliance with the Federal Power Act. The incumbent prepares scientifically-based comments and recommendations regarding conditions that should be included in the FERC license, and other State, Federal and local permits to minimize impacts of hydropower project developments and operations to fishery production and fishing opportunities. Decisions and recommendations are based on coordination with regional staff and synthesis of their analyses and comments.
Key responsibilities include:
Plan, supervise and coordinate fish and wildlife reviews on existing and proposed hydroelectric projects;
Prepare scientifically-based responses to the FERC and other State, Federal and local agencies to minimize impacts of hydropower project developments and operations to fishery production and fishing opportunities;
Track the status of fishery resource reviews, issues and deadlines for potential and existing hydropower projects and operations on an ongoing and timely basis;
Make decisions regarding controversial proposals that might negatively impact fishery production, fishing opportunities and access to fishery resources;
Supervise 2 other biologists;
Perform related duties as assigned.

Special Note:
Some positions may require training in specialized areas such as hydroacoustics, microscopic analyses, underwater research, fish habitat restoration or enhancement.
Minimum Qualifications:
A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry or natural resource management.
AND
One year of advanced professional level biologist experience, specific to fishery resource management or research activities. The required professional biologist work experience is met by service as a Fishery Biologist III, Wildlife Biologist III, or Habitat Biologist III with the State of Alaska or the equivalent with another employer.
Substitutions: A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college, which includes or is supplemented by at least 24 semester hours or 36 quarter hours in the fields listed above, of which 16 semester hours or 24 quarter hours are course work bearing course numbers of 300 or higher. There is no substitution for the required experience.
