Job Description:

The Alaska Court System (ACS) is recruiting for a Legal Technician I to work in the office of the Clerk of the Appellate Courts. We provide a retirement plan, health insurance for employee and eligible dependents, 11 paid holidays, personal leave, Supplemental Benefits System (SBS) and the opportunity to participate in the Deferred Compensation Plan.

Under general direction, the selected applicant will perform the following duties:

Open new cases and notify appropriate parties of any deficiencies;
Work with trial courts, parties, and transcript office as necessary regarding records and transcripts;
Evaluate motions and assign to court as appropriate;
Compose memoranda, notices, and orders;
Calculate due dates and issue notices and orders;
Accurately enter data into the computerized case management system;
Maintain numerous filing systems and track multiple deadlines and requirements through use of the computerized case management system;
Properly follow court rules and office procedures.
The list of applicants generated from this recruitment may be used to fill any future vacancies in this job class in the Appellate Courts occurring within 60 days of the closing date.

Minimum Qualifications:

Graduation from high school or completion of a General Education Development (GED) certificate AND one year of advanced clerical work experience equivalent to a Deputy Clerk II with the Alaska Court System.

Substitutions:

Successful completion of a two-year paralegal curriculum will substitute for the required advanced clerical work experience.

A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college will substitute for the required advanced clerical work experience.

(Spouse includes not only a husband or wife, but also any person with whom the applicant maintains a shared household and conjugal relations). SELECTION PROCEDURE:
Applicants will be required to meet the minimum qualifications as outlined above. Unfortunately, we cannot always interview all applicants. If your application is considered “not qualified,” you will be sent a notice within two weeks after the closing date for this recruitment. COVER LETTER LOCATED IN JOB QUALIFICATION SUMMARY (JQS):
You are required to use the cover letter to write in detail your answers to the “Desired Qualification Questions.” The best way to accomplish this task is to answer each question independently and number each answer. In addition, use the cover letter to clearly explain how you meet the Minimum Qualifications. All applications will be screened to ensure that both minimum qualifications are met and that the answers to the Job Specific Information questions are answered adequately in the Applicant’s Cover Letter. If your answers are not supported you may not be qualified to advance to the interview and selection phase of the recruitment.
