It is important for one applying for a receptionist to be smooth and efficient in running a front desk. The receptionist needs to be able to perform a lot of duties, including keeping an eye on who comes and goes at the same time an eye on the reception area and guest rooms. Receptionists have to ensure that the appointment books are well maintained and coordinated.

However, their most important job is to maintain decorum and a high degree of quality communication between the various parties concerned.

Receptionists are accountable for appointments and scheduling them properly on the days and times specified, as well as reminding people of these appointments. They are required to understand a lot of things about the operations of an office and give information about the same over the phone. They also have to be confident about using computers and software applications that are necessary for their jobs. They also need to be able to make recommendations and handle complaints and requests in a professional and calm manner.

Often the main knowledge or qualifications asked for in receptionist job descriptions are those pertaining to good communication skills, presentablity and language skills with the ability to take up roles and responsibilities on a pro-active basis.

In addition to all of this, the most important quality perhaps, is that they need to be confident with organizational ability and also possess the capacity to multi-task. Often receptionists also have to take up tasks related to selling.
