JOB SUMMARY:
This position serves as the Research Compliance Officer (RCO) for the Veterans Affairs Maryland Health Care System (VAMHCS). In this capacity the incumbent will coordinate research compliance assurance activities and perform assessment and adherence to established research compliance policies and procedures at the VAMHCS. The RCO reports to the Director and works collaboratively with the ACOS/Research, the Administrative Officer, Research and Development Service (AO/R&D), all research programs (including clinical and academic programs that have a research component), and all research committees. The RCO provides executive oversight for the collaboration with principal investigators and research personnel to ensure that all research activities are conducted ethically. He/she forecasts new knowledge needs for changing practice/research environments/population groups, implements and evaluates strategies to meet those needs. The RCO provides oversight for the systematic evaluation and improvement of the quality and effectiveness of research practice within the VAMHCS.

This position serves as the Research Compliance Officer (RCO) for the Veterans Affairs Maryland Health Care System (VAMHCS). In this capacity the incumbent will coordinate research compliance assurance activities and perform assessment and adherence to established research compliance policies and procedures at the VAMHCS. The RCO reports to the Director and works collaboratively with the ACOS/Research, the Administrative Officer, Research and Development Service (AO/R&D), all research programs (including clinical and academic programs that have a research component), and all research committees. The RCO provides executive oversight for the collaboration with principal investigators and research personnel to ensure that all research activities are conducted ethically. He/she forecasts new knowledge needs for changing practice/research environments/population groups, implements and evaluates strategies to meet those needs. The RCO provides oversight for the systematic evaluation and improvement of the quality and effectiveness of research practice within the VAMHCS. He/she is accountable for assuring the development and implementation of standard operating procedures within the VAMHCS for the attainment of Association of the Accreditation of Human Research Protection Programs, Inc., mandated accreditation of the Human Research Protection Program, Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International, mandated accreditation of the Animal Research Program and compliance approval from the VA Office of Research Oversight. Additional ongoing responsibilities include presentation of quarterly reports to the Executive Committee of the Medical Staff, semi-annual reports to Executive Performance Improvement Committee and Center for Performance, monthly report to VAMHCS Research and Development Committee, oversight of monthly training sessions for new employee orientation, and coordination or preparation for routine and for cause inspections of issues related to human subject research, animal subject research and biosafety issues. The RCO provides technical and administrative supervision to a unit of Registered Nurses. The incumbent ensures compliance with laws and regulations. This position also requires a demonstrated ability to work effectively and collaboratively with a diverse population on compliance issues.

Basic Requirements:
Degree: major study in an academic field related to the health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position.
