Manufacturing Operator – S. Portland, ME

12

Description

Job Description Operators are highly likely to be working around acids and other hazardous chemicals. Operators also work in a cleanroom where the purity of the air must be kept at a maximum level for the protection of the in-process wafers. In order to maintain the air quality operators must adhere to strict apparel regulations that prohibit the use of perfume; cologne; hairspray; fingernail polish; and make-up of any kind; also prohibited is the wearing of contact lenses; dresses and any open toe or heel shoes.

The Company’s wafer fabs are laboratory like processing areas (not assembly lines); attention to detail and a relatively delicate touch are important attributes for an Operator to have.

Operators are responsible for taking batches of silicon wafers (called wafer lots) and running them through the various stage of processing required to convert the wafers from raw silicon disks to carriers for complete integrated circuits.

Wafers are approximately 1/32 of an inch (or less) thick, and are batched together in lots of 24 wafers each. Each wafer goes through numerous chemical and mechanical processing steps that add microscopic layers of various materials to the surface of the wafer that results in the construction of hundreds of “chips” (often called computer chips) on top of the wafer.

The completed wafers are shipped to Fairchild facilities in Southeast Asia for test and assembly into packages that are then shipped to customers for insertion into their products such as cell phones, laptops, automobiles, etc.
