Job Summary:

We have an exciting opportunity for an Accountant to join our Finance team at our headquarters in Chevy Chase, MD.
In this role, the successful candidate will manage all aspects of the fixed assets records for HHMI, including inventory monitoring, detailed analysis and initiation of journal entries to record and/or adjust account activity as necessary. You will identify, initiate, and recommend practical solutions to asset management issues. Additional responsibilities include analyzing and preparing journal entries for recording deposits and interest earned on bank accounts. You will also prepare journal entries pertaining to the Institutes intellectual property income as well as perform monthly reconciliations for selected income statement accounts. When necessary, you will prepare audit schedules and provide supporting documentation in connection with the annual financial audit.
Principal Responsibilities:
* On a weekly basis create asset records in the PeopleSoft Asset Management system for equipment based on the interface with the Accounts Payable module.
* Create manual asset records on an as needed basis.
* Prepare and distribute asset decals for all asset records created.
* Process updates to asset records in the Asset Management system based upon Equipment Justification Forms, Equipment Disposal Request Forms, and Decal Action Request Forms.
* Maintain the Location Table in the Asset Management system for use by HHMI sites/departments upon receipt of Location Code Request Form.
* Track results of equipment inventories
* Prepare monthly asset management journal entries for equipment capitalization, depreciation and disposal
* Prepare monthly General Accounting journal entries for interest earned on bank accounts, cafeteria income, headcount and voided check.
* Prepare semiweekly cash deposits and journal entries to record these deposits.
* Prepare journal entries to associate license and matter ID to intellectual property checks deposited.
* Prepare memo requesting the wire transfer from the cafeteria account to the clearing account in the amount of the receipts and prior month’s interest.
* Scan supporting documents for asset disposals into ODOC, and attach the scanned images to the appropriate asset record in PeopleSoft
* Perform monthly reconciliation of Asset Management records to the General Ledger for capital equipment.
* Perform monthly reconciliations of Janelia Farm Donahoe Realty and Moscow Admin bank accounts.
* Perform monthly reconciliations for select income statement accounts including miscellaneous expense and miscellaneous professional services
* Identify, initiate and recommend solutions to IT as they relate to Asset Management issues and work closely with IT to streamline the Asset Management processes.
* Perform other duties as assigned.
Preferred Qualifications:
* Bachelor’s degree in accounting
* CPA certification or MBA
* Four (4) years of experience in the accounting field
* Working knowledge of computer-based financial accounting system
* Proficiency in MS Office software suite and PeopleSoft Financials is desirable
* High level of problem solving skills
* Ability to apply professional principles in performing various analyses and summarize the data in order to resolve the problems
* Must be able to exercise independent judgment and have the ability to apply theories principles and concepts to analyze problems and attain resolution
* Ability to effectively interact with people at all staff levels within and outside the Institute
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills
* Excellent organizational skills with the ability to multi-task
* Motivated team player
