* POSITION SUMMARY: The Nursing Informatics Specialistunder the supervision of the Director of Professional Development and the Vice President of Operations/CNO performs services in a designated area according to the policies, procedures, philosophy, and objectives of the department and hospital. Works cooperatively intra-departmentally and other inter-department services to create a system of quality health care.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES: Maintain current knowledge in areas of clinical specialty. Educates and consults on themes related to patient care, Nursing Clinical Practice and staff development in area specialty. Supports the mission of the nursing education department and nursing leadership.
Assesses, plans and develops, conducts and evaluates education plans and programs in specialty area (Education/Staff Development)
a. Collaborates with the Unit Directors, Clinical Managers, Education colleagues, staff and preceptors to develop and evaluate education programs within the specialty area.
b. Assess the learning needs of the nursing staff in specialty area and determine target audience
c. Identify purpose and learning objectives for education programs
d. Develop content and strategies to meet learning needs
e. Conducts a comprehensive evaluation of all educational activities and utilize this data for future programming
Consults and collaborates with leadership and staff in the nursing process to deliver comprehensive care to all patients. (Consultation/Collaboration)
a. Utilizes nursing expertise and specialization to provide consultation to healthcare providers and consumers.
b. Develops, presents, and implements changes in nursing standards, policy and practice
c. Identifies opportunities to improve products and/or processes in the institution and works collaboratively to implement these improvements.
d. Evaluates and makes recommendations about Performance Improvement issues relevant to areas of nursing practice and patient care
e. Encourages and promotes collaboration between staff members and hospital departments.
Demonstrates advanced capabilities in the diagnosis, treatment, and evaluation of human responses to actual or potential health problems. (Nursing Practice/Clinical Inquiry)
a. Demonstrates a commitment to use her skills and knowledge to assist the professional staff in implementing the nursing process.
b. Acts as a role model for clinical excellence and promotion of professional practice
c. Assists in clinical problem-solving and the development of critical thinking skills.
d. Assesses nursing practices/system-wide factors contributing to problematic patient care outcomes and provides recommendations to correct.
Evaluates findings from research and articles from the literature, and recommends interventions to improve patient care. (Research
1. Participates in the dissemination and utilization of nursing research aimed at assessing and improving clinical nursing practice.
2. Evaluates technology and supports its use to improve patient care
3. Participates in research activities as appropriate
4. Conducts thorough searches of literature/Internet to provide current data and information to improve patient care
Maintains a current level of clinical expertise in specialty area.(Leadership/Professional Development)
a. Contributes to the professional development of the nursing staff to improve patient care and to foster the profession’s growth.
b. Participates in relevant Lowell Hospital committees.
c. Participates in professional associations, continuing education and/or formal education outside Lowell General Hospital.
d. Maintains open communication between all levels of care givers and departments
e. Is organized and systematic in their work with the ability to prioritize and simultaneously work on multiple tasks and projects and resolve problems in a timely manner
