Position Description:
Incumbent is responsible for Nursing practice based knowledge, experience, and evidenced based practice, having direct impact on patient outcomes for critically ill patients. Must possess basic knowledge and skills to function successfully in a collaborative, interdisciplinary, diverse practice setting for effective implementation and planning of patient care and will provide support to families and significant others. Will demonstrate leadership skills and insure timely patient flow as it relates to admissions, discharges and bed turnover.
Assigned duties include numerous activities, such as continuous monitoring of changing patient conditions, hemodynamic monitoring, and other invasive monitoring modalities. Will administer medications, including careful checking of dosages and avoid drug interactions; starting, maintaining, and discontinuing intravenous (IV) lines for fluid, medication, blood, and blood products; administering therapies and treatments; caring for ventilated patients, and observing patients and recording those observations in a computerized patient record. Will consult with physicians and other healthcare clinicians and will assist providers in performing diagnostic tests and analyze results.
Incumbent will be assigned to the ICU but will be cross-trained to fully function in TCU, ED, and MSU, and will be assigned to float to these units based on patient care needs as deemed necessary by the Nurse Manager or Nursing Supervisor.
Position Requirements:
Minimum of 3 years of recent ICU experience required, with prior ED and MSU experience preferred. Current unrestricted RN licensure in any state or territory of the USA. BSN preferred. Must be proficient in the English language; both in written and oral communication. Must successfully complete a pre-employment physical, including drug screening.
Must demonstrate flexibility to work in a constantly changing, dynamic diverse environment requiring excellent interpersonal, clinical, critical thinking, and judgment skills. Must be flexible to maintain clinical competency in ICU, TCU, ED and MSU and be willing to float as necessary to provide staffing coverage as needed. Also, demonstration of leadership skills to include the ability and interest to share knowledge is also required. ACLS/BLS required. CCRN Certification is preferred.

KEY REQUIREMENTS
DUTIES:
As a Staff Nurse you will provide prescribed medical treatment and personal care services to ill and injured veterans. Duties include documenting observations, assessments, and changes in patient’s condition; collaborating with health team members to facilitate positive patient care outcomes; providing a full range of nursing care to patients with a variety of physical and/or behavior problems; and accountable for meeting and maintaining the qualification standards and functional statements of assigned grade. Our facility is seeking individuals who possess good organizational skills which enable completion of work, a demonstrated ability to assume leadership in a patient centered program, and the ability to establish effective communication with patients, families, visitors and members of the interdisciplinary team.
Relocation expenses will not be reimbursed.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
Citizen of the United States. Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. Must be proficient in spoken and written English.
Applicant’s education and length of nursing practice (experience) will be considered by a Nurse Professional Standards Board in determining the grade and salary of the applicant selected. Experience as a RN will be evaluated to determine if the experience is of an acceptable level of quality with regard to the following four dimensions of nursing: Practice, Professional Development, Collaboration and Scientific Inquiry. Each dimension of practice has criteria that demonstrate essential core competencies for VHA Nursing Personnel. The criteria are as follows: Practice: practice, ethics and resource utilization, Professional Development: performance, education/career development, Collaboration; collaboration, collegiality, Scientific Inquiry: quality of care, research.
