SUMMARY: Under general supervision, answers non-emergency dispatch and 911 emergency telephones to assist public and staff with emergency and non-emergency public safety assistance.

Job Duties:
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following tasks, knowledge, skills and other characteristics. This list is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and tasks performed by incumbents of this class.)

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Receives non-emergency and emergency calls for police, fire, or emergency medical assistance;
  • Gathers information on nature of call, details of emergency, and appropriate response;
  • Prioritizes, directs and logs police and fire calls and dispatches units accordingly;
  • Records call information into the computer assisted dispatching system;
  • Provides pre-arrival instructions and a short report of the conditions or incident to responding unit;
  • Completes records research, performs data entry and maintains Arizona Criminal Justice Information System (ACJIS) and National Crime Information Center (NCIC) databases;
  • Researches, enters, clears, cancels and updates warrants, missing persons reports, runaway juveniles reports, stolen article descriptions or vehicles in designated computer databases;
  • Monitors police and/or fire radio, scanning several channels, to ensure safety of Police Officers and Firefighters, and dispatches backup units or additional fire personnel;
  • Resolves routine problems encountered in performance of work assignments, and
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of:

  • Federal, National, State and City telecommunications, 911 and emergency dispatch rules, regulations, guidelines, policies, practices and procedures;
  • Emergency Dispatch radio transmission procedures and methods for Police and Fire departments;
  • Association of Public Safety Communication Officers (APCO) policies and procedures;
  • ACJIS and NCIC formats and codes;
  • Geographical layout and map reading to provide directions to dispatched units;
  • Business English, spelling, mathematical computations and general office practices;
  • Computer hardware, software and peripherals to enter, retrieve, research and manage databases and operate computer assisted dispatch system, and
  • Customer service practices and procedures.

Skill in:

  • Effective oral and written communications;
  • Effectively responding and obtaining critical information from emotional and upset individuals in crisis situations;
  • Entering and researching data in an accurate and timely manner;
  • Maintaining and updating records and files, and
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with others.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work involves rotating shifts and working extended workdays outside the regular working hours and on-call status. Work requires data entry, constant telephone and radio monitoring and utilization, and occasional standing, walking, bending, stooping and lifting up to 30 pounds. Vision and hearing is required to perform essential functions. May be telephonically exposed to emotionally upset or argumentative individuals. Work is performed in a fast paced, high volume call center environment.

Minimum Qualifications:
A High School Diploma or G.E.D., six (6) months general office clerical experience, and the ability to type 30 wpm proficiently.  Must obtain ACJIS and NCIC or Emergency Medical Dispatch and CPR certifications within six (6) months of appointment.  Must pass a polygraph and background check.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENT: An employee in this class is required to live within fifteen (15) miles of the City limits, and within the United States.

Testing Information:
Typing Test:  You will be notified via email to self schedule your typing test date.
Computer based multi-tasking test: Scheduled upon passing the typing test.
