This position, Senior Voice Engineer, is part of a team responsible for developing, planning, implementing, supporting, and monitoring the University of Arizona’s voice infrastructure including an Alcatel-Lucent 5ESS Switch system, Octel voice mail system, various gateways and Cisco Unified Communications (UC) Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) environment.

The successful candidate will be tasked with performing technology assessment, requirements analysis, product evaluation and developing hardware/software solutions, and the associated processes and procedures, to provide telecommunications solutions to meet University requirements and ensure maximum availability. This position is responsible to coordinate and review the installation of hardware and implementation of software, leverage voice management and monitoring tools, prepare and maintain operating procedures and associated documentation, and for establishing project plans, budgets, schedules. The candidate will serve as senior technical resource to resolve problem escalations and utilize best practices to design secure and highly available voice architecture for the UA.

Incumbent will be responsible for participating in a 24×7 on-call for voice infrastructure emergencies.

* Develop and maintain a strategic understanding of the existing voice infrastructure.
* Project manager for complex voice technology design, voice network design and proof of concept implementation.
* Responsible for configuration, maintenance, and support, as well as for coordination of upgrades, implementations, and test plans for all elements of voice network.
* Dial plan review, design, and maintenance and call processing architecture, including long distance and toll bypass.
* Monitors VoIP system health, alerts, and utilization, and analyzes performance indicators to ensure optimal voice quality and operating efficiency of the Cisco VoIP environment and suggests improvements of existing applications and procedures.
* Configure and monitor VoIP backups and design, implement, and document a disaster recovery plan for the VoIP network.
* Audits current production features of CCM and other Cisco VoIP applications to ensure CID is delivering features and functionality required to support the UA’s mission.
* Stay abreast of current technologies and consistently make recommendations based on knowledge and research.
* Evaluates, pilots, and deploys new voice technologies and services.
* Identify process inefficiencies and develop new policies and procedures if necessary.
* Collaborate with other engineering groups and CID team members, readily share information with others, actively seek customer input, and take responsibility for customer issues if necessary.
* Interface with various Telecom carriers to develop, implement and troubleshoot voice solutions.
* Ensure compliance with Federal Communications Commission Regulations.
* Perform as the customer’s consultant for all clients voice technology related services.
* Perform level 2/3 technical support and escalation for telecommunications voice issues by participating in the UITS repair ticket process, and provide training and mentoring necessary to tier 1 and 2 network operations and other team members supporting the voice network.
* Support key initiatives around collaborative technologies, including telepresence, video conferencing, unified communications integration with traditional systems and telephony conversion/migration.
* Maintain switchroom facility.
* Assume and perform other duties and responsibilities not specifically outlined herein, but which are logically and properly inherent to the position.

Five years of progressively responsible experience installing, operating and maintaining communications network hardware and software and participating in network planning and design; OR,

An Associate’s degree in Computer Information Technology or related field AND four years of progressively responsible experience installing, operating and maintaining communications network hardware and software and participating in network planning and design; OR,

Any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education.

Bachelor’s degree in Communications System Engineering, Electrical Engineering or related field, AND five years of relevant work experience with both legacy TDM telephony and Cisco based IP telephony; OR,

Seven years of tradition telephony system design, implementation, operation or maintenance experience which includes two years of experience with Cisco Unified Communications systems and products; OR,

Any equivalent combination of experience, training and /or education.

* Prior experience with Alcatel-Lucent 5ESS Switch complex translations for 7, 10, and 11 digit North American dial plans, international dial plans, and the use of MDR records for toll billing.
* Prior experience designing, implementing, and maintaining Cisco VoIP environment, including, but not limited to, Call Managers, CER’s, inter-cluster trunks, MCGP/H323 gateways, etc.
* Prior experience migrating from a traditional TDM-based telephony and voicemail system to a Cisco VoIP system.
* Understanding of Cisco VoIP & medium/large TDM deployment best practices relating to secure and highly available VoIP & TDM network designs.
* Knowledge of call accounting principles and applications in a Cisco VoIP environment.
* Prior experience with installation and maintenance of standard telephony and high-speed carrier and the delivery of channelized voice across similar circuits.
* VoIP disaster recovery planning experience.
* Demonstrated experience with customer focused problem solving.
* Skill in effectively communicating technical subjects both orally and in writing.
