Research Scholar

Description

RESEARCH SCHOLAR (P98212) University of Arkansas at Little Rock Institute on Race and Ethnicity

The University of Arkansas at Little Rock (UALR) is seeking to hire a Research Scholar in economic/demographic research to support the mission of the university’s new Institute on Race and Ethnicity. (For information on the Institute on Race and Ethnicity, go to http://ualr.edu/race-ethnicity).

The position reflects recognition that research is the basis for moving beyond emotions when addressing sensitive or controversial issues. It further reflects awareness that there is often an economic dimension embedded in racial and ethnic prejudice and discrimination.

Required Qualifications: A doctorate in economics and two years experience in relevant research is required.

The person hired would be expected to hold a doctorate in economics and undertake a research agenda reflecting not only the applicant’s interests but also the agenda of the Institute on Race and Ethnicity. Applicants should present a record of relevant and high quality research as evidenced by publications in scholarly journals and/or professional studies and reports undertaken for academic, governmental, or business organizations. Because the person hired will be expected to assist students and colleagues on campus in research related to the mission of the Institute, applicants should also present a demonstrated record of collaboration in research endeavors. The person hired will be expected to play a role in the development of proposals for funding by foundations, government agencies, and other such sources.

The Institute provides the rare opportunity for a researcher to be on the ground floor in the development of an institute committed to addressing racial and ethnic justice in Arkansas.

UALR hosts the Census State Data Center within the UALR Institute for Economic Advancement. The UALR Institute of Government includes a survey research unit that for eight years has conducted an annual survey on racial attitudes in Pulaski County. Little Rock is the state capital with numerous governmental agencies, the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, and the Clinton Presidential Library. Although most of the usual sources of economic, demographic, and social data are available in Little Rock, it is anticipated that researchers in the new institute will confront and will need to address data deficits which hinder the development of sound policy at state and local levels.

UALR is listed in both the research and community engagement classifications of the Carnegie Foundation. (For more information on UALR, visit http://ualr.edu). Enrollment is 13,000 students. Little Rock, the state capital, is centrally located in Arkansas, with an MSA population of 700,000. Little Rock boasts affordable housing, many cultural attractions, and close proximity to extensive wilderness and recreational areas.

The position is a full-time, 12-month non-tenure track appointment. Depending upon the needs of the relevant academic department, there may be an opportunity for the person hired to teach a graduate or undergraduate course from time to time.

Candidates should submit a letter of application (referencing Position P98212), a resume and a list of three to five references to: Nina S. Driver at nsdriver@ualr.edu , or by postal mail to 2801 S. University Avenue, Little Rock, AR 72204. Official transcripts from colleges conferring degrees will be required upon employment.

Salary, with benefits, is competitive based on credentials and experience. Review of applications will begin upon receipt. The position can be filled at any time upon mutual agreement.

The position is subject to a pre-employment criminal background check. A criminal conviction or arrest pending adjudication alone shall not disqualify an applicant in the absence of a relationship to the requirements of the position. Background check information will be used in a confidential, non-discriminatory manner consistent with state and federal law.

The University of Arkansas at Little Rock is an equal opportunity affirmative action employer and actively seeks the candidacy of minorities, women, and persons with disabilities. Under Arkansas law, all applications are subject to disclosure. The person hired must have proof of legal authority to work in the United States.
