KEY REQUIREMENTS
DUTIES:
Assists backcountry maintenance foreman in planning Personnel, equipment, supplies and livestock needs for trail crews and construction program. Explains/demonstrates work and backcountry living requirements to crewmembers. Is responsible for day to day operation of 3 or more crewmembers. Assigns and distributes work to subordinates. Is assigned to isolated backcountry locations for periods of 4 to 14 weeks at a time. This is a ‘drug testing designated position’ under the Department of Interior’s Drug-free Workplace Policy. If the applicant(s) tentatively selected for this position possesses a valid Blaster’s license or Blaster-in-Training Certificate they will be required to submit to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicant must be able to work and live cooperatively with other individuals under primitive conditions for prolong periods of time.

Basis for Rating: Category rating procedures will be used to rate and rank candidates. Candidates will be ranked into 3 categories:
Best Qualified – applicants possessing experience that substantially exceeds the minimum qualifications of the position including all selective factors, and who are highly proficient in all requirements of the job and can perform effectively in the position.
Well Qualified – applicants possessing experience that exceeds the minimum qualifications of the position including all selective factors, and who are proficient in most of the requirements of the job.
Qualified – applicants possessing experience that meets the minimum qualifications of the position including all selective factors, and who are proficient in some, but not all of the requirements of the job.
VETERANS PREFERENCE: Veteran’s Preference applies to category rating. Within each quality category, veteran’s preference eligibles are listed first, including CP, CPS, XP, and TP. In addition, veterans who have a 10% or more service-connected compensable disability (CP or CPS) are placed at the top of the highest quality category. CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
This position requires that you operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties. A valid State drivers license is required. As a condition of employment, you will be required to submit a completed GSA Form 3607, Motor Vehicle Operator’s License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelop or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that discloses all valid drivers licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you. Position is subject to shift rotation, night and/or weekend work.
Overtime may be required.
Work is performed outdoors, often under adverse weather conditions.
Work requires frequent bending, stooping, walking over rough and uneven terrain, standing, working in cramped positions and climbing. Work requires lifting and moving heavy items.
Work requires hiking in a mountainous area (elevations above 10,000 feet) over a rough and uneven terrain with backpack/tools up to several miles in a day.
Position is subject to frequent extended travel and camping in remote areas.
Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks present a uniquely challenging work environment. These parks represent an extraordinary continuum of ecosystems (93% designated wilderness) arrayed along the greatest vertical relief (1,370 to 14,495 feet elevation) of any protected area in the lower 48 states. They are the highest, most rugged portion of the High Sierra Mountains. Selectee(s) must be able to hike by foot in the backcountry at high altitude for extended periods of time while carrying backpacks, tools and supplies of at least 50 lbs, and be able to camp for several days at a time.
Area Information:
Sequoia National Park and Kings Canyon National Park are jointly administered by one Superintendent and administrative staff with headquarters located at Ash Mountain, Sequoia National Park. Within the administrative jurisdiction of these Parks lie the heart of the rugged Sierra Nevada encompassing over 1,400 square miles of spectacular granite mountains, deep canyons and magnificent forests.
The position’s work location is primarily in the backcountry, but based out of Lodgepole. This area includes employee housing, a visitor center/office building, post office, maintenance shops, a 260 site campground, a concession-operated grocery store (open summers only).
OR
The position’s work location is primarily in the backcountry, but based out of Grant Grove. This area is located 30 miles north of Lodgepole and 55 miles east of Fresno. The nearest towns are Reedley, Woodlake and Fresno. Grant Grove contains permanent and seasonal housing, a coffee shop, curios, public accommo¬dations, visitor center, post office (summers only).
