This position is responsible for the everyday operational tasks and supervision of staff, and campers in the Gather/Gather On the Move Day Camp program. The Head Therapeutic Recreation Counselor is under the supervision of the Therapeutic Recreation Manager and the Indy Parks Day Camp Manager.
Position Responsibilities:
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
• Follow all Indy Parks and Recreation Seasonal Policies and Procedures.
• Direct supervision of campers, volunteers, and Therapeutic Day Camp Counselors.
• Directly supervise campers with disabilities, medicine, specific medical and feeding needs of the campers while in the Day Camp.
• Support the campers in all areas of the day while providing a safe and successful Day Camp experience.
• Have a basic knowledge of strategies and intervention techniques that will work on campers with disabilities and behavior concerns.
• Be willing to work, share and help other counselors with their job responsibilities.
Qualifications:
• Must be at-least 21 years of age and have 3 years of experience working with children with disabilities and behavior disorders in a supportive and structured environment.
• Have a high School Diploma or equivalent. College Degree in Special Education Preferred.
• Have a current certification in CPR and First Aid prior to summer employment.
• Must be able to floor activities with campers.
• Be able to assist lifting campers in and out of wheelchairs 30 to 80 lbs.
• Is willing to change diapers of campers 6 to 21 years old.
• Knows how to or is willing to learn how to do a G-tube feeding to campers.
• Demonstrates good communication, organizational and leadership qualities.
• Has to work all the weeks of the Day Camp
• Commit to attending all Day Camp Trainings and must be willing to start by June 1st.
• Has to be flexible and able to work daytime hours ranging from 7:00 am to 6:00 pm.
• Prefer any bilingual skills, particularly Spanish
Independent Judgment:
Follows the established policies and procedures of the department. Adheres to all rules and regulations. Independent judgement may occur in decisions regarding day camp programs, activities, handling discipline problems, emergency situations and dealing with the public.
